Letters to sons (#3): In pursuit of happiness
18 Apr 2013Of the forces that stir a man’s heart the pursuit of happiness surely ranks among the strongest. As the signers of the Declaration of Independence put it, everyone has certain rights, bestowed on them by their Creator, among them: “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. Webster defines happiness as a state of well-being and contentment then goes on to add a supplementary definition of happiness as a pleasurable or satisfying experience. Therein lies the danger. For there are experiences that can, at first, deliver pleasure only to then turn around and assail you with a maelstrom of harm. Eventually, the horrifying hoax will be shown for what it truly is: a thin veneer of expedient pleasure dearly purchased at the expense of the very happiness you sought. What took but a moment can hand you back a lifetime of regret. So, how do you protect yourself? How can you know which, of the endless choices confronting us each and every day, will lead to true happiness?
